Elon Musk warned that his $1 million giveaway may violate federal law

The US presidential election are just around the corner and the stakes are high. In the recent development leading up to the polls, tech billionaire Elon Musk has been served a letter by the US Justice Department warning him that his $1 million giveaways to registered voters in swing states may have violated federal laws, reported ABC News on Wednesday.
Sources confirmed that the letter was sent to Musk’s PAC in recent days by the Election Crimes Branch of the DOJ’s Public Integrity Section.
Musk, who has been actively campaigning for the former president Donald Trump, announced over the weekend the lottery-style giveaway of $1 million a day to randomly selected swing state residents who sign his PAC’s petition supporting the First and Second amendments on the constitution.
To be eligible for the reward, any person needs to be a registered voter, which is prompting leading experts to question whether the hefty reward could violate federal law that restricts individuals from paying people to register to vote.
ABC News reported that as of Tuesday, Musk had given away four $1 million checks as lottery rewards.
It remains unclear whether the DOJ has deemed Musk’s $1 million reward scheme outright illegal. Officials with the Justice Department declined to comment to ABC News. Representatives of Musk and his America PAC, too, did not respond to requests for comment.
Musk has been an active member of Trump’s entourage this election cycle, campaigning for the former president and utilising his social media platform, X, to attack Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate.
